Course Description

This 4-unit course meets the educational requirements of the International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN) in the specialized area of death investigation for RNs in the field of forensics. This elective course provides:

  • 40 hours of didactic education specific to the IAFN’s FNDI educational guidelines developed in 2009

Learner Outcomes

  • Student will have a standardized body of scientific knowledge for death investigation & the forensic evaluation of the deceased, the circumstances & the environment. (SLO #1).
  • Gain understanding of the concept, development, function, and collaboration of the multi-disciplinary team. (SLO #2).
  • Student will be able to describe and relate forensic nurse death investigator professional practice issues to nursing process. (SLO #3).
  • Gain understanding of ethical practice as a FNDI, applicable scope and standards of practice both nationally & internationally. (SLO #4).
  • Student will be able to describe recommended techniques for collecting, preserving and documenting forensic evidence to meet legal guidelines for admissibility in court proceedings. (SLO #5).
