Course Description

The region around Mammoth Mountain is one of the most scenic areas in California, drawing thousands of skiers, hikers and fishermen each year, It is also one of the most dangerous volcanic hazard areas in the nation. Less than one million years ago, a cataclysmic volcanic eruption completely obliterated all life there, leaving an enormous depression on the earth's surface. Mammoth Mountain is actually a young volcano which has erupted along the edge of that depression, and it could erupt again in the future. This weekend field course explores and discusses:

  • geologic history of the Mammoth region
  • volcanic processes
  • volcanic eruptive styles
  • potential hazards of future eruptions

No previous knowledge of geology is required. Several short hikes of about one-half mile, as well as a gondola ride to the top of 11,000 foot Mammoth Mountain are part of the course. You should be in good physical condition.
