Course Description

An examination of the biological aspects of physical evidence, including chemistry, toxicology, DNA, and other trace evidence associated with a crime. Includes:

  • Identification and forensic analysis of evidence, including fiber, glass, firearm, and tool marks
  • Proper handling of evidence that is used in chemical analysis
  • Laboratory techniques in gas chromatography, infrared analysis and spectroscopy

Learner Outcomes

  • Learn the organization and capabilities of the forensic science laboratory, including what can be done, what is usually done, and what cannot be done.
  • Examine the biological aspects of physical evidence through hands-on techniques.
  • Discover examination techniques in gas chromatography, infrared analysis, and spectroscopy.
  • Conduct forensic analysis of evidence, including fiber, glass, firearm and tool marks, and paint.
  • Explore the role of the crime scene investigator in collecting evidence, supplying comparison, and elimination standards.
