Course Description

This course focuses on young children who are learning more than one language. During the preschool years from birth through five years of age, most children are still acquiring the basic knowledge of their home language, even when that language is English. The purpose of this class is to enrich the reader’s understanding of the language and literacy development of young English learners. Acquiring oral language fluency in English differs from acquiring academic English, the formal language of the school. Being able to communicate in more than one language empowers children in a multicultural society. Based on these understandings, students will implement strategies for fostering and assessing dual language learners’ language, literacy and learning.
