Course Description

This is a broad-based introductory training that surveys social-emotional development from developmentally appropriate perspective. Every student needs social-emotional skills to succeed in school and in life. If learning is to take place in any classroom environment, teachers must get along with students and students must get along with one another. Teaching social-emotional skills to students will allow them to work with others, learn effectively, and serve essential roles in their families, communities and places of work. When academic and social-emotional learning both become a part of schooling, students are more likely to remember and use what they are taught. Participants will learn strategies that can be incorporated in to their education, including a sense of responsibility, caring, and concern for the wellbeing of others, as well as themselves.

Learner Outcomes

  • Participants will learn the major theories of social-emotional development.
  • Participants will understand the correlation between social- emotional development and school achievement.
  • Participants will understand the importance of teaching problem solving and will be able to identify problem-solving steps.
