Course Description

This class introduces you to racism, racial inequity in education, and racial justice initiatives in K-12 schools. You will:

  • explore the continued manner in which racism manifests in schools today
  • strengthen your racial literacy
  • develop pedagogical tools to create culturally sustaining classrooms towards racial equity.

You will also learn to understand the connection between theory and your classroom practice.

Learner Outcomes

  • Participants will have a stronger structural analysis of racism in K-12 schools.
  • Participants will have stronger language and tools to discuss and address racism in schools.
  • Participants will have a developed approach to culturally sustaining teaching.
  • Participants will reflect on how to best implement the California Department of Education’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum.
