ANTH 800.2 - Qualitative Methods for Business
Course Description
The course introduces students to the theories and practices of qualitative research methods in the social sciences, especially sociology and anthropology, but also applicable to psychology, marketing, and other disciplines, with or without the use of AI tools. This class will prepare you to conceptualize and design a qualitative research project that would be suitable for these and other social science disciplines. You will read, discuss and practice hands-on social science research methods on a variety of topics in order to better understand the myriad of ways that qualitative research is applied in a variety of practice settings, including business, non-profit, & government agencies.
Learner Outcomes
- Understand the differences between qualitative and quantitative research.
- Understand the history and theoretical foundations of qualitative research.
- Consider the political, economic, administrative, and ethical issues involved in conducting qualitative research.
- Understand how qualitative research is used in a variety of settings
- Learn foundational qualitative data collection and analysis methods, including in-depth interviews, observation, and content analysis as well as coding and memo writing.
- Become familiar with issues of trustworthiness, validity and reliability as applied in qualitative research.
- Practice how to present qualitative research findings & describe the research process.
