Course Description

A beginning practice class in Iyengar yoga. This course offers instruction in basic yoga postures/poses (asanas) according to the Iyengar method, and includes:

  • classical Sanskrit terms
  • meaning for each pose
  • variations and adaptations of poses
  • the benefits of each group of poses

This course is designed for the general yoga practitioner interested in developing their knowledge, beginning a yoga practice, and understanding the basic concepts of yoga. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to perform basic yoga poses; understand basic Yoga concepts and Sanskrit names and translation of poses; understand the physical and mental health benefits of each group of poses; and begin an independent yoga practice. This beginning course will also help prepare students who wish to take Iyengar Yoga I (AST X401).
