Course Description

As one of the first contacts for the public, community health workers require a general understanding of the full healthcare landscape. In this program, you explore the various roles of the community health worker. The curriculum focuses on:

• continuum of care
• care management concepts
• healthcare advocacy
• understanding health care systems
• financial coverage and benefits
• cultural awareness and ethics
• making home visits
• patient privacy laws

In addition, you practice the skills needed to be effective listeners and communicators through classroom discussions and role-play,  including interviewing and public speaking. A general discussion of medical terminology and the basics of medical coding and billing are included.
