Course Description

Through lecture, group activities, discussion, and fieldwork experiences, you will address the basic leadership skills needed to be an effective educational leader, starting with the question, “Who am I?” Explore your personal values, leadership philosophy, attitudes toward equity issues, management style, and other factors that impact effectiveness. Develop an understanding of Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership from James Kouzes and Barry Posner:

  • Model the Way
  • Inspire a Shared Vision
  • Challenge the Process
  • Enable Others to Act
  • Encourage the Heart

This first course of the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (PASC) Educational Leadership program guides you to understand your own personal style of leadership, and to set goals for leadership development. Topics are aligned to the California Performance Expectations for Administrators and the Model Code of Ethics for Educators.

Prerequisites

Admission to Riverside County Office of Education's Preliminary Administrative Services Credential Program.

Meet at least one of the following:

  • Hold a valid California clear or life teaching credential requiring a bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching;
  • A valid California clear or life Designated Subjects Teaching Credential, provided the holder also possesses a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university;
  • A valid clear or life California Pupil Personnel Services Credential, Teacher Librarian Services Credential, Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential, Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential, or a School Nurse Services Credential, requiring a bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation including filed practice or the equivalent.
