Course Description

Covers the key developments in the history of United States to 1877. While the course gives you a general survey of United States History to 1877, it will rely on key concepts and institutions that were developed.  You cover:

  • American society
  • politics
  • culture

You will focus on the unique historical conditions that framed and formed America’s foundation, and how those conditions affected  the emergence of a new, powerful, and industrial United States. You will also explore various challenges we, as a people, have faced, and discuss the political and geographic realities average Americans encountered as they attempted to deal with expanding democracy, and confronted America’s differing and changing political viewpoints.

Transfer credit courses (XR 1-XR 199) help you graduate on time, earn credits toward your degree, or prepare you for graduate and professional schools. XR courses are equivalent to undergraduate courses offered at UCR. All XR courses are directly transferable for unit and subject credit toward a Bachelor's degree at all campuses of the University of California and the California State University System. Check your receiving institution for transferability.
