Course Description

We will explore Hemingway’s fascination with Key West, the Gulf Stream, and Cuba and link his personal relationships and experiences to his major novels written during the Cuba years. You are encouraged to read some of his selected works, such as "To Have and Have Not," "The Old Man and the Sea," and "Islands in the Stream." Background information to complement the lectures and discussion include the instructor’s photo collection, her recent experience as a lecturer on cruise ships to Cuba, and her research for her Hemingway biography, "Influencing Hemingway: The People and Place That Shaped His Life and Work." We will cover Hemingway’s favorite Havana haunts, including the town of Cojimar, the setting of The Old Man and the Sea, and Hemingway’s Cuban home, "Finca Vigia." This is ideal preparation for those planning to visit Cuba. Schedules of upcoming cruise ships to Cuba will be shared.
