Course Description

The 1972 film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Cabaret," directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and winner of 8 Academy Awards®, is considered one of the greatest film musicals ever produced, and perhaps the last great American film musical. Could it be possible that no film musical in the last 46 years has matched its excellence? We will explore this premise by screening and discussing six contenders: "All That Jazz" (1979), "Victor, Victoria" (1982), "Yentl" (1983),"Beauty and the Beast" (1991), "Moulin Rouge" (2001), and "Chicago" (2002). We’ll also take a look at film musicals since 2002 to see if any have risen to the level of “honorable mention.”
