Course Description

Sixty years ago, a distinguished British historian named AJP Taylor wrote a short history of the 20th century, with four chapters titled as follows: War; Inter-War; War; and Postwar.  These chapters still sum up the century that opened in 1914 with World War I, and is only now closing with the collapse of the Postwar era in 2016, marked by the election of Donald Trump. We will follow Taylor’s outline in considering how and why the 20th century came to be called a “century of total war.”
