Course Description

Hollywood has searched everywhere for compelling stories about people around the world.  How well has it represented life in California?  Some films about “The Golden State” play out like thrilling “E Ticket” adventures, right out of early Disneyland.  Others tell “California Dreamin’” stories of sand, surf, and sunshine.  Still, others tell stories of disillusionment, family conflict, adolescence, and corruption. We will screen and discuss 6 iconic films that explore life in Hollywood’s own backyard:  “Sunset Boulevard” (1950), “East of Eden” (1955), “American Graffiti” (1973), “Chinatown” (1974), “Mi Familia” (1995), “Sideways” (2004). California, here we come!
