Course Description

Besides the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, other types of plants are noted in the Bible and Quran. Many of the wild, weedy species and domesticated plants of the United States, especially in Southern California, have their origin in the Holy Land, and confusion often exists on the true identity of these plants. Is the forbidden fruit really an apple? Is the Rose of Sharon not a rose? Is the Madonna Lily really a lily? Emphasis will be on representative plants, including their descriptions, uses, scripture citations, and related plants in Southern California. Supplemental information will highlight the geography, soil, climate, and seasons of the Ancient Lands. We will discuss botanical classification, and the difficulty in identifying plants of the Bible and Quran. Lists of selected, annotated references, and botanical gardens with biblical and related plants will be provided.
