Course Description

For hundreds of years, America has been a beacon of freedom for women, men, children, and families from around the world. In these contentious times, dehumanizing terms such “aliens,” “illegals,” “undocumented immigrants,” and “anchor babies” are applied to those who gravitate toward our borders to escape poverty, violence, drugs, and oppression--sometimes legally, frequently, illegally. Is America no longer “the land of the free, the home of the brave?” Join us to view six films that explore the experiences of earlier immigrants whose journeys were often heroic to experience a new life in America. View “El Norte” (1983), “Avalon” (1990), “The Joy Luck Club” (1993), “In America” (2002), “Sugar” (2008), and “Sin Nombre” (2009). We will try to answer the question, “Has our ‘melting pot’ reached the boiling point, or can American still be that beacon of freedom?”
