Course Description

Designed for anyone who will work closely with data, from data analysts to business intelligence professionals to in-house counsel, this course will provide you with an understanding of:

  • data privacy
  • ethics
  • how the prevalence of data collection affects society

You will learn the various laws and regulations governing data collection, the liabilities associated with unethically sourced data, data breaches, and what must be done to protect the information that is gathered. Starting with a non-technical intro to data science, you will develop a base understanding of it as a discipline; and analyze real-world case studies that showcase successes in policy, breaches, and lawsuits. In addition, you will discuss how data affects society, both on an individual level, and in aggregate. Gain an understanding of the policy behind data privacy, and how data can reveal human practices, behaviors, and interactions in unintended ways, creating a need for new ethical support. You will walk away from this course with a strong base knowledge of how to approach a client’s or organization’s questions about data collection, and what is needed to ensure the data are collected and used in an ethical manner.
