Course Description

An introductory lecture and two days in the field observing and studying the basic geology and geomorphology of Death Valley National Park. You will identify the main sediments, rocks, and features, and learn how these features formed. Lecture topics include:

  • basic principles of Plate Tectonics
  • the origin of the Basin and Range deserts of eastern California, Nevada, and western Utah
  • rocks and minerals

The field sites you will visit include Badwater, Devil's Golf Course, Devil's Cornfield, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Mosaic Canyon, Darwin Falls, Artist's Palette, Zabriskie Point and time/logistics permitting, Dante's View and Ubehebe Crater.
