Course Description

From Rogers and Hammerstein to Stephen Sondheim, the American film musical is generally considered the apotheosis of the genre; therefore, it is easy to forget that other cultures have produced some equally delicious banquets of magnificent songs, spectacular choreography, and eye-popping visuals.  Join us to screen and discuss six unforgettable foreign language musicals, from Bollywood to the Champs Elysee:  “Om Shanti Om” (India, 2007), “Black Orpheus” (Brazil, 1959), “Young Girls of Rochefort” (France, 1967), “Kabbi Khushi Kabbie Gham,” (India, 2001), “Circus” (Russia, 1936), “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (France, 1964).  Prepare to be surprised and delighted!
