Course Description

The United States has become one of the richest economies, and the most powerful military force in the world. The ways in which this wealth and power are employed are the subjects of intense debate, conflicting ideologies, and constant public reflection and evaluation. Many of the political debates today have roots in the political struggles of the post-Civil War period. We will look closely at one of the most poorly understood figures of this period, Ulysses S. Grant, and the time he spent in the White House (1868 to 1876).
