Course Description

India’s cinema history is more than 100 years old and though it is as well regarded as its western counterpart, Hollywood, there are some very unique differences that Bollywood offers its western viewers. Hindi language, social customs, religious or spiritual concepts, and education, all come together to create a rich cultural context often danced, sung and acted out in Indian films. The words Guru, Nirvana, Yoga, and Karma are part of everyday life in the west. Using selected film clips and movie screenings, class discussions will address the widespread interest in Indian films and the country’s global impact in terms of travel, food, medicine, business, education, technology, and wellness. Hollywood’s influences on movies made in Bollywood will also be discussed.
