Course Description

California, as we know it, was established by Spaniards moving north by land and sea from Mexico, once known as the “Kingdom of New Spain.” Our course aims to establish an understanding of Spain and its people, and how Spain was able to create a world empire of which California would become a part. Spain then lost most of its American empire in the early nineteenth century, and California became a province of Mexico. The United States would acquire it in 1848 through war. Projected images will be used to explore this rich history.
