Course Description

While all elections have consequences, American presidential elections usually affect not just the entire nation but, increasingly, the rest of the world.  In this course, we will study six of the most consequential presidential elections of the 19th and 20th centuries.  In doing so, we will examine the historical context of each election, as well as the outcome, possible reasons for the outcome, and the short- and long-term impact of that election.
