Course Description

Operas have been around for over 400 years yet, for some, they are tough to approach -- or sit through. Let’s take a six-week tour through some of opera’s best loved, and most familiar arias -- opera’s “greatest hits” -- and learn how they fit into the operas they come from; the story behind their composition and their composer; and watch (via YouTube) some of the most famous recordings ever made from some of the most famous opera stages in the world. Each week will include the detailed “unpacking” of one aria, including historical background, composer, character(s), voice range, meaning/lyrics, value to opera, and popular usage (if any).  No prior musical or operatic knowledge necessary.
