Course Description

“In my stars I am above thee; but be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Thus spoke Malvolio in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The Civil War, World War II, The Civil Rights Movement, Uganda, Watergate, and the British Monarchy have all had charismatic individuals at the helm during great political upheaval and turmoil. This course will study six dramatic films that deal with the various forms of “greatness” (if any) manifested by political leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Idi Amin, Richard Nixon, and Elizabeth II. Who achieved greatness? Who was born great? Who had greatness thrust upon them? Directors will include Steven Spielberg, Joe Wright, Ava DuVernay, Kevin Macdonald, Ron Howard, and Stephen Frears.
