Course Description

Based on the scholarship of Jared Cohen, this course will exam the ascendency of eight men to the Presidency of the United States. As Vice Presidents, they came to office not as result of a national election, but by the accidental death of a predecessor. How did they respond? Were they up to the task of fulfilling the role and responsibility attributed to the highest position in the land? Were they successful as leaders, managers, and in their newfound role as Commander-in- Chief? These and others questions will be the subject of discussion as we collectively review the accidental presidencies of John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson. All-in-all, it can be argued that each changed the course of the nation.
