Course Description

Walt Disney assembled a team of artists, voice-over actors, and composers to create some of the world’s most enchanting experiences, not “just for kids,” but for cineastes of all ages. Their work established and defined the feature-length, hand-drawn animated musical and set the stage for all subsequent iterations of this unique form of “motion picture.” Fantasia, with music by Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven, popularized classical music. And, who can forget, “When you wish upon a star...” from Pinocchio. As Walt said, “We live by the spirit and the imagination, as well as by our senses…animation can give fantasy the same reality as those things we can touch and see and hear.” This class will study the thematic and creative accomplishments of the five Disney films among the American Film Institute’s Top 10 animated films of all time.
