Course Description

Students will examine the legal, policy, health, social, psychological, educational and cultural issues associated with child abuse, trauma, family and interpersonal violence. How to recognize the signs of stress, trauma, or violence in children and the specific factors that tend to be present in families and communities where stress and violence are common, as well as the long-term effects on children are discussed. A major emphasis of this course is on helping the participant understand the special learning needs of the child who is experiencing stress, trauma, or violence in his/her life and how to meet his/her needs in the preschool classroom. Working with parents and community agencies is also emphasized.
