ENGL X410.9 - Contents and Methods for Teaching Advanced Placement English Language for New and Advanced Teachers (APSI)
Course Description
The course will review curriculum content and strategies for teaching AP Language and Composition for new and advanced teachers. Areas to be covered include: writing for college and life success; preparing students to take the AP Exam; preparing students for concepts in rhetoric; analyzing reasoning and expression of ideas in prose passages; expository, analytical and argumentative writing; using the AP Course and AP Exam Description; and navigating AP Central and AP Classroom.
Summer 2025 dates and information will be announced January 2025.
Learner Outcomes
- Utilizing close reading, summary, paraphrasing, response, and other skills to build student understanding of dense texts, both modern and pre-20th century.
- Utilizing the new AP rubrics, highlighting, peer editing, modeling, and other techniques to improve student writing.
- Utilizing vocabulary, mnemonic aides, reasoning techniques, and other skills to improve student performance on multiple choice questions.
- Exploring the idea of “Analysis is analysis” to teach students the analysis of film, advertisements, art, music, current events, poetry, fiction, and other media.
- Evaluate how instructors can increase student transfer of those skills to dense informational texts.
- Review how the instructor can harness AP Classroom, old prompts, instructor-made activities, and other methods to improve student learning.
