Course Description

Covers the topics of curriculum theory and instructional practices and processes as they relate to the secondary science classroom, with particular emphasis on the needs of the in-service teacher. Subjects discussed include:

  • transforming science knowledge into science literacy
  • integrating science inquiry into the daily curriculum
  • orchestrating the laboratory (including lab safety)
  • utilizing technology and internet resources
  • strategies for teaching science to English language learners
  • issues of gender equity in science education
  • issues of cultural diversity in science education
  • how to meet the needs of diverse learners
  • science assessments, rubrics, and grading
  • designing engaging lessons aligned with the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards
