Course Description

In this course, students will learn how to create their own tools for the field of Community Interpretation in the Educational Field. Students will navigate through the different interpreting sessions using the modes and rules of interpretation. Students will acquire the educational vocabulary needed to interpret in IEP meetings. Students will understand the importance of outreach and how to maintain a strong communication with the LEP populations. Students will explore different ways to create a website and acquire resources for the LEP population.

Learner Outcomes

  • Students will learn, practice and implement basic functions on how to manage a session in the different modes of interpreting sessions.
  • Analyze and apply different public speaking techniques.
  • Students will learn and apply how to use technology regarding interpreting/translating to support the interpreting profession.
  • Students will acquire specialized bilingual terminology, and learn to manage different interpretation sessions.
  • Students will participate in mock IEP sessions to learn to translate this document to different audiences.
  • Students will learn general terminology used necessary to translate in public school settings, colleges, and in mental health settings.
