Course Description

In this class, students will become familiar with ethical standards for interpreters. They will also become acquainted with criminal court, civil, juvenile, family, small claims, and other court procedures. Students will understand how the court system works and what role the interpreter has in the court system. The Professional Standards and Ethics for California Court Interpreters, established by the Judicial Council of California, will be used as a guide outlining the specific rules. Proper behavior, moral standards, and ethical practices an interpreter must follow when working in any field of interpretation.

  • Students will understand the ethical consequences surrounding interpreting.
  • Students will learn the importance of recertifying in this topic every two years.
  • Students will be able to identify and understand fundamental legal and ethical issues.
